Anna University Tirunelveli was established on 1 February 2007 as a result of a decision to split Anna University into six universities, namely, Anna University, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore, Anna University Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai. Anna University Tirunelveli is bestowed with powers to grant affiliations to colleges and universities conducting graduate and post graduate courses related to engineering, technology and management.Currently the University is functioning from the campus of Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli, which is located 3 km. from Palayamkottai on NH 7 towards Kanyakumari, and about 8 km. from the Tirunelveli Railway Station bus stand.
The Anna University ,which is of the affiliated type is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education (UICEE). UGC have accredited Anna University with Five Star Status in 2002 which is the highest rating. With proven capabilities both in academic and research areas, Anna University was able to receive this honour for a period of five years for excellence in Technical Education.
